Interview with myself

What is an Artist?

An artist is independent. The artist follows and answers to no-one. No boss or client to please, or worry about displeasing.

YOUR JOB IS TO RECOGNIZE BEAUTY AND THE LACK OF IT. UGLINESS.

Sounds great but what do you do all day?

An artist observes.  Eyes and ears open at all time. To recognize beauty but  also pain. Understanding why beauty is lacking. The artist makes things to process these observations and to form an understanding which can be shared with the world. The artist tries to come closer to an ideal. This can be completely abstract but the artist keeps trying

an inner obligation to process beauty, but also to recognize the lack of it. Ugliness. You cannot make beauty without recognizing ugliness.  If an artist is overcome by inspiration  there is no sleep until

That’s it? You just look and make stuff?

No. It comes with a responsibility. The artist has the duty to be honest and to him/herself.
That is the price. Independence comes with the obligation of honesty because, as an artist you only answer to yourself.

When is an artist dishonest?

If an artist observes an ugliness it is the artists responsibility to call it out without fear for repercussion. If you are silent, because you are worried about what your buyers or clients  think, you are dishonest and dependent. Such a person is no artist, afraid to offend whoever has the money.  Most artists are marketeers. Either they don’t see the ugliness or they are afraid.

But for whom?

For anyone who pays attention.

What do you do all day?
