POLYCRISIS

1. Look at ourselves the way an alien would, the outsider perspective
2. From a human contradictory perspective. Maps and statistics, desires and dreams. Fears and violence.
3. The view as an 80’s future prediction. Including thechnology and graphics from 80’s

Where have we come to. What forces dominate us? What options are we left with? What is our ecosystem?

Human habitat.

Film the visitor and present it back to him/her. The cameras can be connected to or separate and removed far from the screens. With a delay, your movements do not immediately influence what you see making it possible to see yourself as another.

The body placed in a fictional/virtial background defined by perspective lines and a horizon like early 80s computer graphics. Others can be placed in the space with you. Someone standing somewhere else. On the other side of the screen. The background can change and objects can be placed, walls and windows.

Screen spaced in the space can function individually as installations or form animated pieces of a staged set. Some non-interactive and merely providing context and space. References to conflicts in thinking that one might have or that we all have.

Examples:
finite resourses - infinite growth
fearing or understanding the other
the person behind the role played (theatre)
rising temperature and airconditioning
nature vs trash
aggression vs defense
man vs nature
embracing hypocrisy

Symbols:
Cigarette bruning in ashtray
birds flying in unison, schools of fish
cars on a highway
power plant, atomic bomb, suspended in space.
chessboard

Experiments:
Using screen as greenscreen
adding surroundings with videomixer
Testing multiple camera angles
What could provide interesting overlays or glitches? Painted or drawn content. Stick figures and on liners.
lighting with a beamer, projecting with beamer on led screen.
film the whole space and represent on screens
add objects.

reflection of buildings

What can your reflection show you? With delay,  a lot more than without. Put you in a different setting, confont you with your locality. Your luxury. Your individuality. Your desires. YOU VS COLLECTIVE. You as statistic relating to global average, where are you on the graph?

You superimposed on all before you, additive. Each person superimposed on the one before.

100cmx200cm screen, older screen with camera drilled through. fixed view point.

1 way, screen on wall. camera attached

(animated painting with camera)

2 ways. You morph into the person looking at you from the other side.

Dan Graham
«Time Delay Room»

This closed-circuit installation was varied by Dan Graham six times following the same structural set-up as described below:
«Two rooms of equal size, connected by an opening at one side, under surveillance by two video cameras positioned at the connecting point between the two rooms. The front inside wall of each features two video screens - within the scope of the surveillance cameras. The monitor which the visitor coming out of the other room spies first shows the live behavior of the people in the respective other room. In both rooms, the second screen shows an image of the behavior of the viewers in the respectively other room - but with an eight second delay.
The time-lag of eight seconds is the outer limit of the neurophysiological short-term memory that forms an immediate part of our present perception and affects this «from within». If you see your behavior eight seconds ago presented on a video monitor «from outside» you will probably therefore not recognize the distance in time but tend to identify your current perception and current behavior with the state eight seconds earlier. Since this leads to inconsistent impressions which you then respond to, you get caught up in a feedback loop. You feel trapped in a state of observation, in which your self-observation is subject to some outside visible control. In this manner, you as the viewer experience yourself as part of a social group of observed observers [instead of, as in the traditional view of art, standing arrested in individual contemplation before an auratic object].

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cybernetics

Cybernetics is a field of systems theory that studies circular causal systems whose outputs are also inputs, such as feedback systems. It is concerned with the general principles of circular causal processes,[1] including in ecological, technological, biological, cognitive and social systems and also in the context of practical activities such as designing, learning, and managing.
