FAVELA PAINTING

Rio de Janeiro 2005-2021.

Founded by Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn in 2005. Favela Painting builds bridges between community art, urban planning and social design, creating multi faceted social impact with a lasting legacy. Several large scale murals were made in different favelas in Rio de Janeiro.

The projects provide an opportunity for people to work together to improve their living space. By collaborating with locals, art is used as a weapon to combat prejudice, create sustainability solutions and attract positive attention. Technical training and jobs provide security while working together reinforces the social fabric.

The projects in Rio were followed by projects in Philadelpia, Haiti, Curaçao and other places.
